Hexcel plans Windsor shop

One more large company has chosen Windsor as the location for its first Colorado manufacturing operation.

Carbon fiber and composite material manufacturer Hexcel Corporation will lease space in the Great Western Industrial Park.

Connecticut-based Hexcel is one of the first companies to lease space in Great Western’s new build-to-suit development, which also houses Vestas Wind Systems.

Hexcel and Great Western Development Company are tight-lipped on the details including why it chose Windsor, how many workers the facility will employ and what salaries will be.

Hexcel, however, will provide prepreg – a material used to join metals and other materials – to neighboring tenant Vestas. The company also markets its products to industrial manufacturers who make products such as wind turbine blades.

Neither company would confirm if Vestas’ presence played a role in Hexcel’s decision to locate in the industrial park.

“I was very pleased to get them as a tenant, and we certainly all put a lot of effort into getting the deal,” said Rich Montgomery, vice president of Great Western Trust Company.

“We’re just working hard trying to bring more industries and primary job growth and really creating a diverse industrial part out there.”

Hexcel, which reported $331.4 million in net sales for the third quarter of 2008, also provides products for the commercial aerospace and space and defense industries.

Construction began Monday for the space Hexcel will use for its office, manufacturing and warehouse. The company is expected to move in late 2009.

Hexcel has locations worldwide, including several locations across the United States and Europe.

Other companies currently operating at the Great Western Industrial Park include Owen-Illinois, manufacturer of glass containers, and ethanol plant Front Range Energy.

“We’ve just got the global leaders in manufacturing in each of their industries and Hexcel is another example of that,” Montgomery said.
